Digestive system

Digestive system

The digestive system or gastrointestinal tract is a set of organs which cater for food intake, its mechanical and chemical processing, absorption of nutrients, and elimination of undigested and indigestible components of food. Its major function is the retrieval of nutrients from food, i.e. digestion. The human digestive system is almost 8 meters long and its course is segmented, twisted and widened in various ways. It runs from the mouth to the anus and it is formed by two types of organs (the organs of the gastrointestinal tract and glands). A well-working digestive system is hence the basic precondition for the proper retrieval of the necessary nutrients and all substances.
