In English this mushroom is known as hen-of-the-wood or ram's head due to its appearance. The fruiting body is a large cluster, which consists of a massive whitish or light gray stipe and hundreds of often fused caps. It grows in late summer and autumn and is relatively rare. The Japanese name maitake translates as "dancing mushroom", which refers to the incredible joy that seekers felt when they found this healthful mushroom.
