The outermost layer of the skin is epidermis. It forms a waterproof protective envelope of the body surface and it is formed by a thin stratified squamous cell epithelium and a basal membrane. The outer layers of the skin are in the process of constant keratinisation, dying and being shed. The entire epidermis gets completely replaced in about 3 weeks. The skin area ranges from 1.5-2 m2 in size, which represents some 5-9% of the entire weight of an individual. The thinnest skin is on the eyelids and ears, the thickest, on the contrary, can be found on the back, soles, and palms.
